Russian-Speaking counsellor in Sydney

Looking for a Russian-speaking counsellor in Sydney or a Russian-speaking therapist online anywhere in Australia? If English isn’t the language you feel things in, therapy in English can add a layer of translation that gets in the way. You end up explaining a feeling instead of actually feeling it, choosing the closest English word instead of the one that’s actually true.
I’m Yana, a Registered Counsellor (ACA Level 2) based in Sydney, offering online counselling in Russian and English. Fluent in both, not translating on the fly. The goal is simple: an authentic space where you don’t have to work to be understood.

Why the language matters

A lot of what shapes our relationship with food, body, and emotion goes back to childhood — and for many of us, that childhood happened in Russian. The phrases our mothers used about food. What “eat your plate clean” actually taught us about hunger and control. The specific shame that comes from a culture where feelings weren’t really discussed, just managed.

You can describe all of that in English, to an English-speaking counsellor. But something gets lost in the retelling. Working with a Russian-speaking counsellor in your first language means we skip that step and go straight to the thing itself.

There’s also something useful in being able to move between languages within a single session. Some things are easier to say in Russian. Others, oddly, are easier in English, especially if English became the language you learned to talk about feelings in as an adult. You don’t have to pick one and stick with it.

What a Russian-speaking counsellor helps with

Emotional eating, understanding what’s actually driving the urge to eat when you’re not hungry, without more rules or restriction. Click to read more
Body image, untangling your worth from your weight, especially where diet culture and family expectations have blurred together. Click to read more
Anxiety, including the kind that shows up as overthinking, perfectionism, or never quite feeling like you’re doing enough. Click to read more

I work from an anti-diet, values-led approach — ACT, CFT, and somatic tools, not meal plans or willpower advice. If you’ve spent years trying to fix yourself through control, this is a different way in.

You might recognise some of this

Maybe you moved to Australia as an adult, and most of your inner world still runs in Russian, even after years of speaking English every day. Maybe you were born here, but the house you grew up in was Russian-speaking, and certain feelings only make sense in that language. Maybe you’ve tried therapy in English before and it felt fine, technically, but distant — like talking about your life instead of actually being in it.

None of that means something is wrong with you. It means the tool didn’t quite fit. A counsellor who speaks both languages and understands both cultural worlds can close that gap.
